Hilary Conlan

Biology and Chemistry Subject Leader, Cambridge Campus

Hilary joined the teaching staff as a subject leader in 2020 just 3 weeks before the COVID-19 lockdown started. Prior to this, Hilary had been teaching a range of subjects within the Animal & Environment department of ARU.

Originally, she trained as a State Registered Nurse, specialising in accident/emergency and operating theatres.  After having children, she worked in both primary and secondary schools as a special-needs assistant. Changing course, when her children were doing GCSE’s and A levels, she did a Natural History and Wildlife conservation degree at ARU. This led to the opportunity to go to Tanzania for 18 months, to run the Animal Behaviour Research Unit in Mikumi National Park and study baboon and elephant.

Hilary is easily distracted when her students’ pets make unexpected entry to the zoom classes.
