Congratulations to student Kya Johnson, who has been appointed as President of the Ruskin Journal, Anglia Ruskin University’s student magazine. Kya is currently working towards her BA (Hons) degree Writing and English Literature, we spoke to her about ARU College and her plans for the magazine.

Why did you apply to ARU College and choose the English Literature and Creative Writing Course?

I have always wanted to go to university, but I never had the courage to make that leap. So, when my best friend told me that she had applied to Anglia Ruskin University, I knew this was my chance. I chose Writing and English Literature because of my passion for Literature. My dream career would be something literature related. At the moment I am quite focused on the role of an Editor either for books or magazines but, in the past, I have dreamt of becoming an author, a lecturer, a librarian or opening a bookstore/cafe. I am hoping my time at ARU will help me figure out which pathway is best for me.

Why did you want to be President of the Ruskin Journal?

When I first joined ARU I very quickly researched to see if there was any kind of university magazine or newspaper. When I found The Ruskin Journal, I sent a message expressing my interest but unfortunately at the time there were no vacancies. Thanks to some lovely encouragement from wonderful individuals, I decided to take a chance and run for the 2021/22 President position. I am so grateful to those who voted and supported me. A role like this is perfect to gain editor experience and I can’t wait to try my best!

What are your plans for the Ruskin Journal?

Honestly my first plan is to learn as much as I can. The current president, Ciéra Cree, is an incredible person and I have a lot to learn from her. After that, we will have to see!

How has your time at ARU College helped you with your knowledge to apply for the role of President?

ARU College has really helped me with my confidence. It has been a wonderful place to gain knowledge and to settle back into education. I have met such wonderful people who have supported me, both students and ARU staff. I am so grateful for my time at ARU College. Although there were definitely hard times, it has only made me more prepared and proud of what I have accomplished so far.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I would like to do a masters and PhD at Anglia Ruskin. Hopefully in the next 3 years I will discover exactly which parts of English Literature and Creative Writing I love the most and would like to turn into a career.

Fun fact about yourself

I have three cats who are my world and I love them so much!
