10 things you should know before arriving at ARU College

We’re so thrilled that you’re joining us at ARU College soon. As you prepare for your upcoming journey, we want to provide you with some essential information to help ensure you have a smooth transition into life at ARU.

Here’s 10 things you should know before you arrive:

  1. Student Visa Requirements – Ensure that you have your visa before you travel to the UK. Also make sure that all your important documents (CAS, Passport, etc.) are carried with you in a document folder.
  2. Local Transportation – It is important that you familiarise yourself with the local transportation available in the city you’re studying. Make certain that you have a plan in place for getting to and from the airport.
  3. Accommodation – Secure your accommodation before arriving in the UK. University accommodation is of high demand so you should also consider private sector accommodation and homestay options.
  4. Weather – UK weather can be unpredictable, and you should pack clothes for all weather eventualities; it can range from -10°C to 40°C throughout the year. Remember to also bring an umbrella!
  5. Banking and Finance – Open a UK bank account and ensure that you have considered finances for accommodation deposit, rent, council tax, bills, transportation, food, and social activities!
  6. Welcome Week Welcome Week and your induction is the week before you commence your studies and you should expect arrival webinars, campus inductions, and introductions to some of your teachers.
  7. Societies and events – The ARU Students’ Union is the place to go for ARU societies, volunteering, and events. At ARU College, we also run The Collective which hosts activities such as film nights and cross-campus events.
  8. Support and wellbeing – Moving to a new country to study can be challenging, so we advise that you familiarise yourself with ARU’s health and wellbeing services. The ARU College Student Support Team are also on hand to assist if you need them.
  9. Campus facilities – Learn about the campus facilities that are available to you, such as the library, computer rooms, shops, health services, the gym, and the Students’ Union.
  10. Location – Whether you’re joining us in Cambridge or Chelmsford, it’s a good idea to research the location to find out the top spots, places to eat and shop, and travel tips for the city.

Still not sure about any of the above? Chat with one of our ARU College Student Ambassadors! They have been where you are now and are happy to help where they can.
